I'd bet that many people know more birds than they think they do. When we were kids, the word books taught us customary birds like the blue bird or robin. Finding these birds on the lawn we might call out "Look at the birdie!" Not stating its name or kind, but just knowing it was a bird was a good start.
Birds come in dissimilar sizes and shapes, but they do all have distinct things in common. All birds have feathers instead of hair like us mammals. Their feet appear rather reptilian with claws and scales and some of their feet are webbed for swimming or involving about in water. Birds have wings and a tail for flying from place to place. Birds have beaks or bills, the shape of which gives a clue to how and what they eat. Large, thick beaks are useful for breaking open seeds and fruits, while thin bills can pick out seeds from pine cones and snatch insects from the air. The differences among birds give rise to dissimilar species.

Just for fun write down all the birds that you know. Write down all the dissimilar species that you can identify. You know, the ones that you're already customary with. If you have never kept a bird list, this could be a beginning point for your life list. You can add new birds as you find them. If you get stuck on listing them all, consult a field guide to jog your memory. There are bound to be a few more that you could add to your list.
Some birders just check off the name of their new bird after they spot it. Others, who are more information oriented, will make note of the location, habitat, date and time when they saw the bird. It doesn't matter what type of check-off list you use or how detailed it is. It's not a competition, but rather a personal victory to check off other bird on your list.
Many of us will never get to see all the birds. Birds live in many habitats nearby the globe, from the tropics all the way up to the arctic. So, some bird species live in far-off lands that we will never get to visit in person. But the fact remains that there are still so many bird species that we can observe.
